Waterfowl Telemetry
It’s more than banding a bird… it’s the leading edge of conservation and science anywhere in the world. Right here in Louisiana.
YOU CAN BE PART OF LOUISIANA’S WATERFOWL FUTURE!
BLUE-WINGED TEAL
Blue-winged teal nest primarily in the Prairie Pothole Region of the US and Canada and winter throughout the Gulf Coast and into Central and South America. Many migration and wintering uncertainties remain given their long distance movements.
MALLARD
Mallards are the most common duck across the northern hemisphere. They are the highest harvested duck species in North America and are very adaptable in their use of habitats. However, mallard counts and harvest has decreased both in LA and throughout the Mississippi Flyway over the past 20 years.
GREATER white-fronted geese
Greater white-fronted geese, or specklebellies as they’re commonly called in Louisiana, are Arctic nesting geese that historically wintered along the Gulf Coast. Their overall population is trending upward; however, their wintering distribution is shifting northward throughout the Mississippi Alluvial Delta and beyond. Identifying important habitats and factors influencing movements is critical for maintaining sustainable numbers across their historic range.
